Investing in automation: Our new wire preparation machine
CHLOE BURGESS

At Brucom, we are committed to continuously improving our manufacturing processes to deliver the highest quality products and services to our customers. That's why we are excited to announce the arrival of our new automated wire preparation machine. This investment will enhance production quality, efficiency, accuracy, and turnaround times on cable orders.

Our new wire preparation machine

Our latest investment is a Multi-Core Cable stripping, crimping, and heat-shrink tube inserting machine, which is designed to automate several manufacturing processes within a single workflow.

Rather than carrying out multiple operations manually, the machine automatically cuts multi-core cables, strips both the outer and the inner insulation, crimps terminals and inserts heat-shrinking tubing with exceptional precision. Combining these processes into one automated operation reduces manual handling, minimises the risk of errors and ensures every cable is produced to a consistently high standard.

The machine is equipped with a high-precision servo motor control system that delivers accurate and reliable wire positioning throughout the manufacturing process. It has a user-friendly colour touchscreen interface, which allows operators to save programmes and quickly switch between different cable types, making product changeovers faster and more efficient.

It can produce between 800 and 1,000 cable assemblies per hour (depending on cable specifications). The machine's increased capacity enables us to respond more quickly to customer demand while maintaining the quality and precision expected of every one of our products.

"The new machine will reduce the process of time [of producing cable assembilies] from 62 seconds to 15 seconds per assembly and has an estimated return on investment of less than 7 months."

Gareth Bruce
Managing director

This technology is widely used across industries where reliability and precision are vital, including automotive, electronics, electrical equipment, and wire-harness manufacturing. By investing in equipment that is trusted across these sectors, we can continue delivering products that meet the highest standards.

What this means for our customers

For our customers, this investment offers many benefits throughout the manufacturing process.

Having greater automation means improved product consistency, more accurate cable preparation and reduced lead times. By reducing manual intervention and combining several production stages into one streamlined process, we're able to manufacture cable assemblies more efficiently without compromising on quality.

Our investment in automation helps us to deliver dependable products, faster turnaround times and the high level of service our customers expect.

Why do we invest in new machinery?

At Brucom, we don't invest in new machinery simply because new technology is available; we invest when it creates real value for our customers, our team and our business.

New automated machinery allows repetitive, precision-based tasks to be completed more efficiently and consistently than manual processes.

Rather than replacing skilled people, it enables our team to focus on the areas where they add the greatest value, including quality control, technical expertise, problem solving and continuous improvement.

Investing in advanced manufacturing equipment helps us to:

  • Increase productivity
  • Improve product quality through greater precision and consistency
  • Reduce manual handling and minimise the risk of errors
  • Create a safer, more efficient work environment

Every investment we make is carefully considered, and we look beyond the purchase itself and ask how it will improve our manufacturing flow, increase capability and strengthen our long-term competitiveness. Our goal is to build a factory that continually improves through better technology, smarter processes and the expertise of our people.

"The real benefit isnt simply labour saving, it is that we can redeploy our people into higher value activities where they can develop new skills, contribute more to the business, and ultimately earn more through increased capabilities and responsibilites."

Gareth Bruce

Automation isn't about replacing people; it is about allowing machines to do what they do best, while enabling our skilled team to focus on the work that requires experience, judgment and innovation. By removing repetitive manual tasks, we create more opportunities for continuous improvement, technical development and delivering greater value to our customers.

As we continue to invest, we are strengthening our ability to deliver high-quality cable assemblies quickly, accurately and reliably for years to come.
